Medium Poodle

Description

An athletic, well-balanced silhouette, a natural in-between of the Miniature's compactness and the Standard's imposing build: solid bone structure, a straight back, a well-developed chest, strongly muscled hindquarters. A long, straight head with a fine muzzle, dark oval eyes with a keen expression, drop ears covered in curls. A dense, curly or corded coat with continuous growth, available in solid colors per the FCI standard: black, white, brown, gray, apricot, red. The Medium occupies the same size range as the adult English Cocker Spaniel — 35-45 cm — but with a leaner musculature and a less massive silhouette.

Temperament

A playful, sociable temperament, and less vocal than the Miniature, which makes cohabitation easier in an apartment with neighbors. An energy level of 4/5 requiring about 60 minutes of daily activity, alternating physical effort (running, swimming) and cognitive work (agility, obedience). High sociability with children (5/5): its 10-15 kg build makes it sturdier for lively interactions than the Miniature. Strong family attachment — copes poorly with isolation beyond 5 to 6 hours. Good openness to strangers if socialized before 14 weeks.

Training

Maximum trainability (5/5) inherited from the Standard variety — rank 2 per Coren, it learns a new command in 2 to 5 repetitions and performs it correctly in over 95% of cases. The Medium excels in medium-sized agility, rally obedience and light tracking work. Its 35-45 cm build falls in the "medium" jump category in FCI agility competitions — a structural advantage over smaller varieties. Sessions of 15 to 20 minutes, twice a day, alternating positive reinforcement and retrieve games. Learning new complex behaviors (agility sequences, retrieving specific objects) keeps its energy level under control.

Feeding

For a 12 kg adult: 180 to 230 g of premium medium-breed kibble a day, split into 2 meals. Avoid a single meal and intense exercise within 60 minutes of eating — GDV risk is lower than in the Standard but not zero from 10 kg upward. Quarterly weight check: excess weight worsens hip dysplasia. Omega-3 supplementation is beneficial for sebaceous adenitis. Treats capped at 10% of caloric intake.

Living conditions

Compatible with an apartment from 45 m², or a house without a garden, provided 60 minutes of active exercise a day are respected. Its 35-45 cm build allows for long hikes, medium-sized agility and swimming — an activity especially suited to the breed's water-hunting heritage. Cold tolerance is slightly higher than the Miniature's thanks to its greater body mass, but the non-waterproof coat remains vulnerable to prolonged rain. Recommended for active households: runners or hikers, families with children looking for an athletic dog.

Grooming and coat care

A hypoallergenic, continuously growing curly coat: without regular brushing, the curls form compact mats within 2 to 3 weeks. Brushing 3 to 4 times a week with a wide-toothed comb and a detangling brush. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks: the historic lion clip from 17th-century hunters (hindquarters shaved to ease swimming, pom-poms left over the joints to protect them from cold), or a sporting clip depending on preference. Typical price: 50 to 75 € a session for this size. Ear canal plucking at every session.

Health

Hip dysplasia: a progressive deformation of the hip joint, less severe than in large breeds but documented in the Medium variety — an OFA X-ray of breeding stock is recommended. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-prcd): a hereditary disease causing progressive night blindness, a DNA test is available and mandatory for serious breeding stock. Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency): documented across the whole Poodle lineage, diagnosed via an ACTH stimulation test. Chronic ear infections: a hairy, damp ear canal, weekly cleaning and plucking at every grooming session. Sebaceous adenitis: less common than in the Standard, to watch (scaling, localized hair loss).

Breed history

The Medium variety represents an intermediate selection stage in the breed's history: the Standard Poodle, descended from the Barbet documented as early as the 15th century, first gave rise to the Medium through selection of smaller specimens suited to hunting in confined terrain. The "lion" clip documented from the 17th century onward — hindquarters shaved so as not to weigh the dog down in water, cuffs left at the wrists to protect the joints from cold — was practiced on Medium-sized Poodles, the ones most used for duck hunting. The FCI attributes the origin to France (standard 172, updated March 2024). Less represented in exports than the Toy or the Standard, the Medium remains popular in France and continental Europe.
