DogMatch My selection FR

Everything you need before the arrival.

19 purchases examined, 16 essentials and 3 comfort extras: what each is for, what it costs, and in what order to buy. The same list we recommend at the end of every quiz. Updated August 4, 2026.

160 to 420 € Strict day one
270 to 690 € Full kit, extras excluded
D minus 3 Order ahead

The right reflex: order everything two or three days before the arrival. A bed set up in advance takes on the smell of the house, and your dog discovers a territory that is already settled instead of a construction site of cardboard boxes. Harness and crate sizes go by the estimated adult size, not the puppy's.

Day one, the essentials

Without these six basics, the arrival will not go smoothly. This is the bare minimum for your dog to be identifiable, to eat, to sleep and to go out from the first hour.

Collar and engraved tag

10 – 25 €

Name and phone number engraved: whoever finds your dog calls you right away, with no need to have the microchip read. Identification is a legal requirement; the tag is what people actually read.

Harness and leash

25 – 60 €

A harness spreads the pull across the chest instead of the windpipe — essential until leash walking is solid. Buy for the estimated adult size.

Stainless steel bowls

15 – 35 €

Stainless steel holds neither odors nor bacteria and goes in the dishwasher. Get a non-slip base for large breeds, which push the bowl around as they eat.

Quality kibble

35 – 80 €

Start with the brand the breeder or the shelter was using, then transition over ten days. Every DogMatch breed page details feeding needs.

Washable bed

30 – 90 €

A bed sized to the dog, in a quiet corner but not an isolated one: dogs want to see the family without sitting in the traffic. Removable cover — you will wash it often.

Travel crate

45 – 130 €

Essential from the drive home onward, and for every vet visit. Introduced properly it becomes a den rather than a punishment — and it makes car trips safe.

House-training and walks

A dog goes out three to five times a day, in any weather. These four purchases turn a daily chore into a frictionless routine.

Poop bags

8 – 15 €

With a dispenser clipped to the leash you are never caught out. Not picking up is a finable offense, and the amount depends on the municipality.

Training pads

15 – 30 €

Until house-training sticks — a few weeks for a puppy, sometimes a few days for a shelter adult — they save the floor.

Microfiber towel

10 – 25 €

Plenty of walks end in the rain. Microfiber absorbs several times its weight in water and dries fast, unlike an old bath towel.

Travel water bottle

12 – 25 €

Dogs dehydrate quickly on a walk, flat-faced breeds most of all. A bottle with a built-in bowl saves hunting for a water point.

Grooming and hygiene

Three tools, and upkeep becomes a ten-minute weekly routine instead of a grooming appointment every other month.

Brush matched to the coat

12 – 45 €

Long coat: daily brushing to prevent mats. Short double coat: a slicker during the shedding season. The breed page details coat upkeep.

Nail clippers

10 – 25 €

If you can hear the nails clicking on tile, they are too long. A trim every 3-4 weeks prevents ingrown nails.

Dog-pH shampoo

10 – 22 €

A dog’s skin is far less acidic than ours: human shampoo can dry it out and cause itching. Space baths out — a healthy dog rarely needs one.

Training and enrichment

A bored dog destroys things. These three purchases cover chewing, solo occupation and positive reinforcement — the three pillars of the first few weeks.

Tough chew toys

12 – 35 €

Chewing soothes, and relieves a puppy’s teething. A dense rubber toy lasts months where a plush toy lasts an evening.

Food-dispensing toy

12 – 30 €

Filled with kibble, it keeps the dog busy for a long stretch and tires it mentally. A good support for the first absences, alongside real work on being alone.

Training treats

8 – 20 €

Very small, very tasty, delivered within the second: this is the positive reinforcement that builds a reliable recall. Count them into the daily ration.

Comfort ahead of time (optional)

Nothing essential here — but if the budget allows, these three change daily life, yours as much as the dog’s.

Safety gate

40 – 110 €

It marks out which rooms are allowed during training, without shutting the dog in. Far more effective than a closed door for a dog discovering the house.

Car safety harness

25 – 70 €

An unrestrained dog becomes a projectile under braking, and an animal loose in the cabin can be held against you if it interferes with driving. The car harness clips into the existing seat belt.

GPS tracker

45 – 110 €

For breeds with a strong hunting or roaming drive — Beagle, Husky, pointers. Clips to the collar and tracks in real time on your phone.

What about health?

One item you cannot buy on a marketplace: pet insurance. Waiting periods start the day you subscribe, so comparing before you adopt is what gets you covered from the first misstep.
